A water needle is a small-diameter tubular structure for abstracting groundwater. A water intake screen is fitted at the bottom and, in a traditional driven construction, a strong pointed tip as well. The tip helps drive the pipe deeper, the screen retains selected sizes of soil particles, and the pipe column connects the aquifer to equipment at the surface. T01
The names Abyssinian well, water needle and mini borehole are often used for the same principle. However, specific constructions may differ: one is driven, another is installed in a drilled hole. When ordering, ask not only about the name but also the installation method and materials.
How does water reach the tap?
A pump creates a pressure difference. Water from the surrounding aquifer enters the pipe through the screen and is then supplied to the system. A narrow water needle normally uses a surface pump or pump set; a hand pump may be a separate option matched to the construction. A pressure vessel and controls help manage supply, but they do not create an aquifer.
Imagine two water needles of equal length. One screen is installed in permeable sand, the other in a layer with low permeability. Equal depth and the same pump do not mean an equal water supply. The practical conclusion is simple: an equipment list is not enough; the source's capabilities also need assessing.
What makes it attractive?
A compact construction may be considered where access for large equipment is difficult or water is needed seasonally. Under suitable conditions, a wide well shaft is not needed. A small pump set can be integrated into an irrigation or household water supply solution.
However, compact does not mean no additional work. Space for equipment, suitable pipework, electrical protection, access to serviceable parts and, for a system kept through winter, frost protection are still needed. These items should not appear in the estimate only on the last day.
What are the main limitations?
The key unanswered questions concern aquifer permeability, changes in water level and water quality. Shallow groundwater can be affected by surface pollution; a closed pipe does not itself protect against all contaminants. A borehole screen retains soil particles, not all dissolved substances or microorganisms. H02
Another limit is a surface pump's ability to draw water. This is assessed from the water level during operation, not just the depth of the bottom of the water needle. Understand this distinction before choosing a pump or evaluating an advertisement.
What should you clarify before ordering?
Ask for the planned construction, proposed testing, completion criteria and actions if adequate water is not obtained to be described. Ask who will handle documents. The Lithuanian Geological Survey states that a water needle is regarded as a borehole in Lithuania, so calling it a well does not remove the requirements applicable to boreholes. L01
For an enquiry to Santechnikas iš Žemaitijos, provide not only the intended depth but the actual objective: irrigation, water for a country house or supply to a permanently occupied home. The discussion then starts with the need, not the price of one pipe.
