Dust and pollen season: air intake location and filtration

During dust and pollen season, the ventilation question changes: we want fresh air without bringing in as many particles as are present outside. Mechanical supply can help manage the air path and filtration, but this is not a promise to remove every pollutant or cure an allergy. Assess the intake location, a filter suitable for the particular equipment, its installation and maintenance. A more expensive element in a box alone does not confirm the whole system's result.

The first filter is a well-considered intake location

Before choosing a filter class, inspect where the air comes from. Is there heavy traffic, a dusty road, compost, a chimney or building work nearby? The WHO overview of ventilation and outdoor pollution emphasises the importance of intake location. The design establishes the specific position, not simply the most convenient hole in the wall.

Surrounding conditions may change. Parking or material storage may appear in a previously empty area. Do not therefore treat the intake surroundings as permanently unchanging. Owners should observe seasonal and neighbouring changes but must not relocate a connection at their own discretion: any alteration must suit the system, separation distances, façade and other possible design conditions.

Which particles do you want to reduce?

Dust, pollen and combustion particles differ in size and origin. Filter classification and specific product data help describe what it captures under specified test conditions. The label “anti-allergy” does not tell the whole story. Ask for the actual filter name, class, suitability for the unit and manufacturer's stated operating limits.

The EPA filtration guide presents filtration as an additional air-quality management measure, not removal of every pollutant. Do not promise a completely “pollen-free” house merely because of one new element. Air also enters through open windows, doors and other routes, and particles can be carried in on clothing.

Suitability for the particular heat-recovery unit

Filter dimensions, sealing and resistance must suit the unit. Simply wedging in a similarly sized element does not confirm correct installation. If air passes around the frame, some airflow may bypass the filter. Owners should use an option permitted by the manufacturer or an explicitly confirmed compatible solution rather than choose solely by the lowest online price.

A denser element may change system operation, so do not select it independently of the fan and settings. The person selecting it must know whether the intended airflow is maintained. Do not automatically treat new noise as a normal sign of “better cleaning”. The entire operating regime matters, not merely the filter-class label.

What should be checked before the season?

Inspect filters and the air intake according to the manual and remove visible obstructions using permitted methods. Do not climb to a hazardous location or reach towards operating machinery. If the intake grille is difficult to access, a suitably prepared person must arrange servicing. A seasonal task appearing brief is no substitute for safety.

Record the filter replacement date, model and system condition. Pay attention to alarms and unusual sounds. A time-based reminder does not mean that the unit directly measures all contamination. Learn the particular warning logic from the manual. Resetting a notification without performing the necessary maintenance does not solve the problem.

Replacement is not the same as washing

Not every filter can be washed or cleaned in the same way. Unsuitable washing may change material properties or damage the structure. Follow the manufacturer's instructions; if none are available, clarify first. Do not arbitrarily return a wet element to the system merely because it looks cleaner.

Do not swap supply and extract elements if their purposes differ. Labels and arrows must remain understandable months later. Keep model information so that next season you do not have to guess from an old photograph. Small installation details may matter more than the difference between two products described similarly in advertising.

Window use and everyday operation

An open window can bypass the mechanical system's filtration path. This does not mean windows must never be opened, but understand what you change when doing so. If someone is sensitive to seasonal particles, coordinate practical operation with healthcare-professional recommendations and actual outdoor conditions. A ventilation article must not replace an individual treatment plan.

Do not switch off all air supply simply because of the season. Reducing the required airflow may create other indoor-air problems. Instead, assess suitable filtration, intake arrangements and maintenance. During a specific outdoor pollution incident, procedures must follow equipment guidance and recommendations from responsible authorities, not be improvised differently each time.

An additional room air cleaner

A portable particle cleaner may supplement measures in a particular room, but it does not replace necessary fresh-air supply. It does not always remove gases or odours as a person imagines. Choose according to room demand, actual performance and noise at the intended setting, not merely the manufacturer's largest declared coverage area.

If a cleaner is used in a bedroom, check whether its position and speed are actually acceptable at night. A unit constantly switched off because of noise does not perform its intended function. However, do not connect it to the house ventilation network or otherwise change its purpose. Each measure needs a clear role in the overall air-quality plan.

How should seasonal results be monitored?

Record filter changes, outdoor circumstances and the system mode. If building work took place or windows were open for long periods at the same time, note these conditions too. A change in a family member's wellbeing alone cannot precisely establish filter effectiveness, so address individual health questions separately. A technical log helps selection and maintenance but is not a medical study.

If a new element becomes dirty very quickly, discuss it with the maintenance specialist. Investigate environmental or installation causes rather than arbitrarily removing the filter so the system runs louder or more strongly again. Initial and final operating modes must remain comparable.

What should you provide for a consultation?

State the heat-recovery unit model, filter used, photographs of the intake location and observed seasonal changes. The heat-recovery unit maintenance guide helps prepare servicing questions, while in an enquiry you can describe the particular property. A suitable solution combines a cleaner air path, a compatible filter and checked operation, not merely a promise that one product will block out the entire outdoor environment.
