An enthalpy heat exchanger is often presented as an answer to dry winter air. It can recover some moisture, but it is not an unlimited humidification appliance and does not solve every indoor-climate problem. Its benefit depends on the particular model, airflows and room use. Before changing an exchanger or buying a new heat recovery ventilation unit, it is worth understanding what conditions are actually being recorded in the home and what result is expected.
What the enthalpy function means
The Zehnder description explains the transfer of energy and moisture between extract and supply air. This is a particular heat exchanger operating principle. Nevertheless, materials, construction and performance can differ between manufacturers. The word 'enthalpy' alone states neither the precise recovery nor every installation and maintenance condition.
It is important to distinguish recovering moisture from creating new moisture. The exchanger uses the conditions of the existing streams, so the result depends on what is happening in the rooms. If the moisture source is insufficient or conditions differ, one exact room percentage cannot be promised. An advertising figure is not automatically the future number on a hygrometer.
First make sure that measurement is meaningful
Record temperature and relative humidity together over several days. Check the meter's location and instructions. An instrument on a warm surface or beside a supply opening may not represent the whole room. A brief reading after intensive window opening does not describe the entire season either. A consistent pattern and clear context of use are needed.
Then check whether system airflows have been adjusted according to the design. Excessive unnecessary ventilation and a correctly selected air quantity are not the same. However, flows must not be reduced solely to improve the humidity percentage if this impairs necessary air exchange. The problem must not be solved at the expense of one other parameter.
When recovered moisture can be useful
During the heating season, moisture recovery can help reduce a tendency towards dryness in some homes. However, occupant numbers, use and actual airflows must be known. A large, rarely used home and a densely occupied small dwelling are not the same situation. A good result for a neighbour alone does not confirm the same benefit in your case.
The summer operating arrangement also matters. The appliance controls can have different modes, and the effect of particular conditions must be checked in the documents. An enthalpy exchanger should not be called an air conditioner or dehumidifier. Temperature and moisture control functions must be distinguished so that the owner does not expect something the system does not provide.
What it does not solve
If excessive moisture in the home comes from a leak or materials that have not dried, changing the exchanger alone does not remove the cause. The EPA moisture guide emphasises correcting the water source. The enthalpy function also does not replace necessary bathroom extraction, a clear transfer route or suitable duct adjustment.
If there is an odour, its route must be investigated. Do not automatically conclude that moisture transfer is to blame. An incorrectly installed condensate detail, interaction between outdoor openings or another problem may be involved. A reliable diagnosis is needed before changing an expensive component, especially if the smell appeared suddenly after previously satisfactory operation.
Illustrative example: very dry in winter
Suppose a family measures low relative humidity, while ventilation is left running around the clock at a high setting chosen during construction. First check whether this is the intended mode for occupation and whether actual airflows are suitable. A hardware change before that check can conceal incorrect operation rather than put it right.
After checking the system, consider whether an enthalpy exchanger is permitted for the particular model and what its conditions would be. If the change is possible, discuss the data, cost, maintenance and expected benefit without absolute promises. After installation, compare similar conditions. One reading from different winters is not precise evidence that the new component caused the entire difference.
Not every heat recovery unit can be upgraded this way
Interchangeability must be expressly provided for by the manufacturer. Similar dimensions or an element that physically fits are not confirmation of compatibility. Control settings, protection, condensate arrangements and other components may differ. The Komfovent installation document shows differences between particular constructions; always use the instructions for your own model.
Before ordering, provide the complete unit designation and serial information if the supplier needs it. Check whether the change affects the warranty and who will make the necessary settings. Do not transfer online advice from another model, even if its casing looks similar. The compatibility agreement must be documented.
Maintenance depends on the material
The manufacturer may permit washing one element but specify a different procedure for another. Do not pour chemicals onto it or clean it with a high-pressure jet without clear permission. Damage to a membrane or other sensitive parts is not necessarily immediately visible. It is worth obtaining the maintenance instructions before purchase, while establishing who will do the work and how the component will be reached.
Filters remain necessary too. An enthalpy exchanger does not make the system resistant to construction dust or free from cleaning requirements. Check their type, installation direction and replacement procedure. State separately if the system was used during dusty work, because this history can affect its present condition.
Do not judge the result from the first day alone
After the change, comparable use and weather conditions must be observed. If the weather became milder at the same time, occupants increased or more cooking began, the humidity pattern can change for those reasons too. Record them so that the new component's benefit is neither exaggerated nor rejected without justification. One number without a temperature does not allow two periods to be compared reliably.
If the expected effect is not achieved, first check installation, control configuration and actual airflows. There is no need to add a humidifier immediately or replace the whole unit again. A systematic investigation distinguishes an unsuitable expectation from a genuine system mismatch and selects the next action according to confirmed data.
How to make the decision
Measurements from the home, an exact model, confirmation of compatibility and clear conditions of use are required. Assess not only the expected comfort benefit, but the whole system's operation. Read more about general maintenance in this article, and in an enquiry provide the humidity and temperature patterns and equipment information. This comparison helps select a justified upgrade, rather than a promise described as universal.
