How we work: Santechnikas iš Žemaitijos installs shallow boreholes using compact drilling equipment and does not use metal pipes driven into the ground. Driving is discussed in this article only as an alternative method found on the market.

The term water needle describes the water intake construction but does not always specify how it is installed. A traditional steel point can be driven into suitable ground. In other cases, a hole is drilled first and the pipe with a screen is installed afterwards. Combined methods also exist. Russian practical material likewise discusses this distinction between preliminary drilling and pipe installation. R01

Choose the technology by considering three questions: how the ground will be broken up, how it will be removed and what will prevent the hole collapsing. Manual drilling educational material distinguishes auger, percussion, circulation and water-jet principles. They have different application conditions. T06

How do the methods differ?

Method Operating principle Potential advantage Main limitation
Direct driving A purpose-made pipe column with a point is driven down Compact equipment and a small working area Stones, structural loads and suitability of the layer
Auger drilling A rotating tool brings soil to the surface Ability to observe the material removed Stability of loose, water-bearing borehole walls
Jetting / water jet Flowing water helps break up and remove soil Useful in some soft layers Working water requirement and unsuitable hard inclusions
Mechanical drilling with flushing A tool breaks up the ground; circulating fluid removes cuttings Wider capability with suitable equipment Not a single technology for every type of rock
Percussion drilling A reciprocating tool breaks up the ground; material is removed separately An alternative for certain more difficult layers Work duration, equipment and borehole control

The table compares principles; it is not a method statement for a specific plot. Manual describes work organisation, not one universal drilling method. Compact describes equipment size, not proven ability to penetrate every ground condition. T05

Why might several methods be used on one site?

The upper section may suit an auger, while a loose aquifer may need a different wall-stabilisation or installation solution. A change of method is therefore not inherently a defect. Problems arise when the contractor does not explain beforehand how it will affect price, materials and completion.

Customers should receive more than a line saying drilling: a description of the construction left in the ground, its protection, how unwanted water entry paths will be isolated and how the result will be demonstrated. Drill tool diameter and final pipe diameter are not the same measure either.

Which method is best?

The best method suits the specific layer and intended use, not the most attractive advertising name. Avoiding impacts may benefit one construction, but drilling a wider hole creates other issues to solve. Smaller equipment may ease access, but it does not remove the need to handle excavated soil or flushing water.

Before ordering, ask for the main method, a possible alternative and the stopping criterion. After installation, separate verification stages are needed: a water supply test, construction and document checks, and a water quality assessment for drinking use. The method is a route to the result, not proof of the result itself.
