Auger drilling uses a rotating tool to break up the ground and help bring it to the surface. Depending on the equipment, the tool is turned manually or mechanically. Manual drilling does not mean any depth can be reached with a garden auger alone; it is a broader group of small-scale techniques. T05

This method can help identify the initial layers and prepare a hole for the intake construction. Success depends on more than the turning force, however. Whether the drilled hole remains stable until the pipe and screen are installed is equally important.

What can the removed ground tell you?

The material brought up lets you observe changes in ground type. This is useful during the work, but an isolated sample of wet sand does not prove a sustainable water supply. The sample needs to be related to depth, the installation process and subsequent testing.

Ask for major layer changes to be recorded. Such a description later helps explain why a particular screen was selected or why the method changed. Simply saying water was found leaves too many unanswered questions.

The most difficult part – loose water-bearing material

Some holes remain stable only for a limited time. Walls in loose, water-bearing ground can collapse, requiring temporary support or a different method. Manual drilling educational material identifies this as an important application limit. T06

There must therefore be not only a drilling plan but an installation plan. How will the required depth be maintained? How will the screen reach the intended layer? What happens if the hole begins closing after the tool is removed? Discuss these questions before work starts.

What changes when the hole around the pipe is larger?

A gap remains when the borehole is wider than the final pipe. It is not automatically a useful water reserve. The construction must define which section admits water and which prevents unwanted flow from upper layers. Casing and suitable sealing are important elements of source protection. H02

Do not accept a universal promise that filling the whole gap with gravel will improve it. A filter pack, where needed, and sanitary sealing perform different functions. The solution needs to be justified by the specific construction.

When is it worth considering?

Manual or small auger equipment may suit locations with limited access. A harder-to-reach plot does not change the geology, however. If obstructions occur, it must be clear whether the equipment can continue or another method is needed.

Compare quotations for completed work: drilling, pipe, screen, sealing, development, testing and documents. Only then can you fairly judge whether a lower initial equipment price means lower overall system cost.
