Two borehole estimates may differ greatly not because one contractor charges less, but because they cover different work. One price may include drilling only, another the entire system to the house. Break down the scope before comparing totals. This article does not guess prices: it explains which items to obtain in writing so a quotation can be understood and checked later.
What does a price per metre mean?
First establish the drilling method, depth and construction to which the rate applies. Ask whether it covers labour only or specified pipes and the intake screen too. A metre without materials is not equivalent to one with all installation components. Do not judge the initial quotation solely by the figure in the largest type.
Also agree how actual metres will be calculated if the planned depth changes. Is there a procedure for stopping and making a further decision? What happens if geology differs? The owner should know when approval is needed and the contractor who decides when the original plan no longer matches reality.
Design and documents
Separate design preparation, required documents and data submission in the estimate. Do not dismiss a paperwork item as an insignificant detail. Documents link the actual structure to its construction, location and use. The Geological Survey's questions section provides information about the register and passports, helping compare quotation terminology with the actual procedure.
Passport included must not be taken as a substitute for every possible permit or investigation. Ask for the exact final document set. Any owner action, consent or additional information needed must be identified beforehand. Neither side should have to guess responsibilities.
Construction and materials
Ask for the construction type, main dimensions and material purposes. Pipes as usual does not allow quotations to be compared. The screen and its installation depend on actual conditions, so the estimate must describe how changes are agreed. Not every dimension written initially will be final.
The Grundfos groundwater engineering manual explains the relationship between borehole construction and pump operation. The simple lesson for owners is that the construction is not just a random pipe around a pump. However, a general manufacturer manual is not a design for a specific Lithuanian plot and should not be used to independently dictate every layer detail to the contractor.
Development and testing
A separate item should explain preparation for use and which test data are handed over. Briefly seeing water is not equivalent to an agreed extended test. Ask about flow, duration, level measurement and the report. Describe the result so it can later be compared, not merely remembered.
An unfavourable result also belongs in the estimate. What is payable if quantity does not meet intended demand? Is further exploration included or does it need another agreement? Exact geology cannot be promised beforehand, but work and financial responsibility can be clearly defined. This helps prevent disputes after an unexpected outcome.
A pump is more than a model name
The pump quotation should show its selected flow and pressure. Provide actual consumption needs, building elevations and the pipe route. Higher motor power alone does not mean a better solution. Match the pump to source capability rather than using it to force a promised quantity from the aquifer.
Check inclusion of protections, controls, cable, supports and necessary installation fittings. Commissioning and owner instruction matter too. A cheaper boxed pump and handover of a working system are different products. If buying some equipment yourself, establish compatibility and responsibility for selection beforehand.
Pipework to the house and electricity
A borehole on the plot does not yet mean water at the kitchen tap. Measure the intended route and discuss excavation, surface reinstatement and building entry. The estimate must identify where the contractor's scope ends. Connection can mean a joint at the wellhead or all pipework, so define the term.
Assess electrical work separately while ensuring overall compatibility. Who prepares power, protections and control cables? Who checks safe operation? An unspecified cable length or unprepared supply can prevent commissioning after drilling is complete. Qualified specialists must perform electrical work, not the owner following a general online diagram.
Water testing and treatment
Separate sampling and laboratory testing in the estimate. Establish which parameters are ordered and the sampling point. Do not buy treatment solely from a neighbour's experience. The initial estimate can allow space and connections, with specific treatment selected after suitable information is available.
If filters are included, ask which identified problem they address and the flow needed for maintenance. Treatment capacity, backwash water and drainage must suit the entire design. Underestimating maintenance can later change both electricity and water-use costs.
Quotation validity
The document should carry its date and validity terms. A change in scope or material specification may alter it, so keep revised versions separately and identify the accepted one clearly. Mixing old and new items in one message complicates acceptance.
Completion work and comparison
Check taxes, transport, waste handling, reinstatement and warranty service terms against the final amount. A quotation excluding VAT cannot be compared directly with another's final total. Pricing every screw is unnecessary, but main scopes and exclusions must be clear.
Use one table and give both contractors the same task. Blank fields indicate unanswered questions, not a bad quotation. For your enquiry, include plot information and consumption needs. A good estimate explains what you pay for, what arrives on handover day and which further costs remain during operation.
